Wow.
This website really held out on a gem that a lot of people seem to have slept on.
This track came out in 2000. Two. Thousand.
Mika Hakkinen was still the reigning Formula 1 champion. Dale Sr. was in serious contention for his eighth Winston Cup, oblivious to the tragic events that would befall him the following February. Tommi Makinen had won 4 back-to-back WRC titles and was gunning for his fifth. The newest Gran Turismo game was GT2! Forza didn’t exist, PGR was still a year away, Need For Speed hadn’t even delved into tuner culture yet, and the first Fast & Furious was just being filmed.
And at a time when almost every Re-Volt addon track was either a basic Lego or retextured Lego, Re-Ville stands far taller than the rest. Marc Schroeder’s masterpiece that he would oddly never follow-up (as far as I can tell, this IS his final track chronologically regardless of what the release dates on this website may say), was LIGHTYEARS ahead of its nearest competition. Not only is this track tremendous by 2000 standards, this track still holds up by today’s standards! All of the textures load (this seems to be a problem with Schroeder’s other efforts), glitches are minimal and it genuinely feels like something Acclaim could have worked on – perhaps a rework of the dreaded “Council State” track? Honestly, if I didn’t know any better, I’d be inclined to suggest Nick Baynes himself helped Marc on this, given that the two were in contact for a while and how Marc’s prior tracks were nothing at all of this calibre. To go from a Lego to this in just a few months, the first few months of Re-Volt’s existence, and then bow out on a high note?
I did manage to track down a higher-res version of the Skybox if anyone’s interested – it’s a CGI version of London that Schroeder would later use in his CS 1.6 maps and had originally made for a HL:Deathmatch map called “Audion Industries”. And yes, for those that name might sound familiar to, this is the same guy who would later develop the critically-acclaimed “Poke646” mod for Half Life and get picked up by the likes of Gearbox and EA to do level and texture work throughout the early ’00s on titles like Nightfire. No wonder you’re looking at something special here.
One other thing I also find interesting to note about this track, according to Schroeders’s archived website (which is somehow still online!):
There was an update issued on the 29th May, 2000, which fixed the following issues:
– Invisible track holes fixed, track is all solid now
– Correct surface properties (also see “Tech Specs”)
– Unintended “balcony shortcut” fixed, no longer available
– Unintended “start/finish shortcut” fixed, no longer available
– Scaffold reposition bug fixed, no camera irritation anymore
– Several reposition bugs on “hot steam roof” fixed
– FPS improvement through new ncp data
– Enhanced AI (saves 2 more seconds per lap)
– Some small graphical improvements
– Music
And this update still survives on both his (in)active website and in the XTG Xtreme track pack, and crucially does not seem to be represented here. If anyone here knows how to add that file, it should be added, in case it ever gets lost. Because it appears those who commented before me have been unwittingly playing a broken track, unaware that this update was ever issued!
I’m amazed that I managed to miss this track after all of these years. Likely one of the best rooftop tracks out there. It doesn’t have an abundance annoying jumps like other rooftop tracks usually do. This track does an incredible job at using the space that it’s given. There are multiple instances where you drive in a section that is above or below a section that you previously drove, and it doesn’t feel forced. Incredible track for being from 2000.
Another absolute favorite RVGL track for me. It’s my favorite rooftop for sure. This rooftop hits differently. I really love the graphics and ambience, but the thing I love the most is the flow. I remember how much I practiced this track to understand it, and it was totally worth it.. Absolutely fun with friends. It has everything you want in a track. I hope it gets into the main pack soon.
This is by far my favorite track in the bonus pack.
This is the best track among the classic tracks, you can also mention Petrovolt and quake. This track is pretty well developed for its years, This track is quite complicated, In terms of turns, and I like the locations, dark, cozy, bright and cool!
Can’t believe this track is actually 5 days older than me.
Still one of the best custom tracks!
The only thing I don’t like is that at the beginning of every race, some stars will be used, which impairs the pace. It’s great in all other aspects, though!
