Another 80's concept car arrives! Meet the 1986 Peugeot Proxima.
Just when Matra showcased the P29 in 1986, Peugeot aswell with their radical concept, the Proxima, which was designed, developed and built by none other than Peugeot themselves. The name Proxima is from the Proxima Centauri, the closest star to our solar system.
As the successor of the 1984 Peugeot Quasar, the Proxima is a radical car that Peugeot ever developed even though it was conceived by science fiction at the time.
The Proxima is a 2+2 coupé that was used using CAD (Computer Aided-Design), which was a new piece of tech at the time. The car used a wide arrange of materials such as resisn and carbon fibre. The canopy of the car is quite unusual, yet interesting. To get on, the canopy splits in hall crosswise, but the front half of it rotates forward while the rear half slides backwards but also, you need an electronic key card not only to enter, but to start the car's engine. It can seat for 4 people.
It is equipped with a 2.8 Litre, 24 valve DOHC twin turbocharged V6 engine, delivering a whopping 680 BHP with an AWD transmission and a 5 speed manual. It's unique traction control detects this power to make the car not lose traction and prevent spinouts. It also has ABS carbon ventilated disk brakes.
What's also unique is the solar panels at the back of the car. When it's stationary, the heat is produced by the sun which is cooled by a temperature control system, making sure there are no heating problems for it. It is also high tech too, such as two onboard computers with high definition graphics to assist the driver, rear view cameras to park safely, an anti-collision radar, a GPS system (one of the few prototypes that had that at the time) and a feature that allows the driver to view the car's surroundings.
The Proxima didn't enter production, but it did put on a show that Peugeot can make a radical car at the time. It is succeded 2 years later when in 1988, they showcased their radical supercar prototype, the Oxia.
Finding the engine sound for the Proxima was quite hard for me and LivingWithGames, but we decided to use the sound of the Renault 25 as it uses a V6 engine. Enjoy!
